The Bargain Chick

Feb-3-2010 By Jessica

Making a slight change to my blog. I initially started this blog as a way of keeping track of my kids, sharing their activities and various milestones with family and friends. I have really developed a passion for bargain hunting over the last few years and while I’ve shared a few things here, I thought it was time to start my own bargain blog, devoted SOLELY to saving money, earning money, and spending less. I will probably still post a few things here and there here… but feel free to come check out my adventures in bargain hunting over at The Bargain Chick.

More savings!

Jan-24-2010 By Jessica

SAFEWAY
Spent $6.60 for all of this.
Savings: $43.23

FRED MEYER
Spent $4.62 for all of this.
Savings: $27.13

I have my meal plan for the week in place. We are mostly cooking from the freezer and pantry. We’ll buy milk, bread, and fresh produce - but not much else. Our grocery bill should be right around $25 for the week. Probably even less. That’s exciting! Even though we aren’t doing any major grocery shopping, I did decide to stock up on some deals that are about to end.

These bargains were from using coupons that I printed out online and then getting (and using) Catalina coupons (these print out with your receipt after you pay), which I could use on my next purchase. I made two purchases at each store, the first one was the one I spent money on, getting a Catalina. The second one, I then purchased similar items, and used the Catalina from my first purchase AND coupons, which had the cashier either looking at me all bewildered like, because the register said to give me .62 cents back. Or, I paid something small out of pocket, like $.62 cents.

I am new to the Catalina thing, but I found some good detail on how these work and what these are over The Krazy Coupon Lady blog. You have probably gotten them before and either threw them at the bottom of your purse or just tossed them out. Some of them can really help lower your grocery bill so watch for them! This is a brief description, taken from TKCL:

Catalina: Sometimes abbreviated as “CAT”, Catalina coupon machines located at register, dispense long receipt-like coupons that may be used on a future purpchase. Catalinas, refer to the coupons themselves which may be manufacturer or store coupons. Some Catalina coupons are advertised and some are generated based on consumer behavior.

I know these aren’t great deals on real necessities, maybe even considered as “junk” by some standards - but it’s nice to have these on hand for snacks, sports, school events, etc. I don’t stack the boxes in the pantry and tell the kids to help themselves. These will LAST quite awhile over here! The regular price of Betty Crocker Fruit By The Foot at Safeway is $2.99. Goldfish crackers… $2.39. Are you kidding me? I get queasy thinking about paying full price like that for any of this stuff. That is nutty. Without a sale and coupon, they would not be in my home… EVER!

I feel like the grocery bill is the easiest bill to cut back on out of all the ones we have. And, of course, who can’t use a little cutting back right now? We are constantly looking at corners that can be cut, expenses that can be scaled back on, things we can do without, etc. I cut back, but it doesn’t mean I cut everything out. Store sales and manufacturer’s coupons/rebates are there for me to take advantage of, and that I will — just takes a few minutes of my time to match them all up! :)

Fruit Snack Frenzy

Jan-23-2010 By Jessica

I went to Safeway last night (a few of them, nice that they are on just about every corner in Vancouver!) to take advantage of the deal I posted about a few days ago. It worked like a CHARM. We initially paid about $2.50 for the first 4 boxes (TOTAL - so .64 cents each), but after that, every 4 boxes I “bought” were FREE using coupons and Catalina print outs that the cashier kept handing over to me :) This left me paying .15 CENTS A BOX… I’m just so stinking proud :)

I am not done yet, either. This deal is good through tomorrow, 1/24/10. I have one Catalina left in my wallet so I will get 4 or 8 more boxes. So then I will have paid .10 cents each for 24 boxes of these things!! These aren’t things I buy very often, so the kids will be in snack Heaven for a bit. I’ve started my snack tote for our drive to California during Spring Break. Yah!

Target Deals 1/17-1/23

Jan-20-2010 By Jessica

There are a few good deals and even one freebie this week at Target. The first one I’m taking advantage of is for a new toddler carseat for Bailey. She’s been in her “convertible” seat since she was 12 months old. She’ll be 7 next month, so I suppose it is time. :) She still fits in her old one perfectly, the peanut she is, but I figure she’s probably got a couple more years of sitting in a booster. This one is nice and PINK, will add a nice splash of color to my white minivan. LOL.

They have a deal this week, when you purchase a carseat, you get a $20 gift card. The booster seat I’m looking at it is $44.99. That $20 gift card will drop it down to $24.99. I then have a $10 gift card from last week, when I transferred a prescription from Walgreens. If you are interested in doing this, go print your $10 pharmacy coupon from Target.com - it’s worth it! They were quick and I ended up getting my prescription as part of their $4 program, so I got paid $6 to transfer it! :)

This is the carseat I’m getting Bailey. $14.99 - I’m so excited about this deal!!

There are a few other bargains to be had at Target this week too…

Lean Cuisines, $1.45 each
Sale priced at $1.79 each
Use $1/3 coupon here
Total: $1.45 each

Nivea Body Wash, FREE!
Priced at $2.99
Use $2/1 coupon from the 1/3 Red Plum Insert
Stack with $1/1 Target store coupon
Total: FREE!

Coupons!

Jan-20-2010 By Jessica

You can sign up for $10 in Betty Crocker coupons here. These are great to have on hand to pair up with a sale and they usually don’t have quick expiration dates! Thanks Utah Deal Diva!

Next up… a buy one, get one free offer for Sunbelt snacks. These are good through February 18th, 2010. They are regularly priced at around $1.39 a box at Walmart and Winco. I’m not sure about other stores, but using this coupon, that makes them about .69 cents a box! I like to have these types of granola bars on hand during softball season and quick snacks. I will be stocking up! It says “one per purchase” on the coupon, but I would suggest just keeping a few in your purse. You can pick a couple of boxes up each time you are at the store between now and 2/18. Click here to print the coupon! Good deal! :) Thanks Misty The Bargain Hunter!

And last up…. a great deal to be had at Safeway (and reportedly all affiliate stores also) this week on Betty Crocker Fruit Snacks!

The advertised deal is:

Buy General Mills Fruit Shapes, Fruit By The Foot, Fruit Gushers, Fruit Roll-Ups, or Fruit Roll-Ups Fruit Stickerz and save up to $3.50 on your next shopping order. Purchase between 12/28-01/24
Buy 3, Get a $1.50 Catalina (coupon to use on ANY of your next shopping orders)
Buy 4, Get a $2.50 Catalina
Buy 5, Get a $3.50 Catalina

These ROLL, so that means you can take those Catalinas, use them on your next order and buy more of the Betty Crocker Fruit Snack promo items. You will then get the same Catalinas again.

There are coupons to be matched up with this sale, which is what makes this deal so GREAT!

You can check out the scenarios The Krazy Coupon Lady has, as well as links to all of the printable coupons currently available here. Print them while you can! Most coupons have a print limit. With a deal like this, they will probably go quickly! Thanks Krazy Coupon Lady!

Glade Candles Deal @ Target *HOT*

Nov-10-2009 By Jessica

Glade

Fantastic deal alert!! SC Johnson just released new Glade coupons on their website. These coupons can go fast, I was just able to print FOUR sets of them, by using the back button on Internet Explorer. And, right now, Target is running a promotion to make these candles super cheap! I have to say… their holiday scents smell sooo good! They have Bayberry Spice (which sounds odd, but smells excellent), Homemade Gingerbread, Hollyberry Wreath, Peppermint Crush, French Vanilla, and Apple Cinnamon.

The Target deal is… buy 5 products from the holiday scents collection priced at $2.50 each and get a $5 gift card. One of the coupons is “Buy a scented oil candle holder and get a free refill”. The free refill counts as one of the five you buy for the gift card, so if you print two of those coupons, you will only need to pay for three items. The math work out to something like this:

Buy 2 scented oil cadle holders (holiday collection) = $5.00
Get 2 Refills Free = $0.00
Buy 1 additional refill pack and use $1.00 off coupon = $1.50
Total = $6.50 that you pay OUT OF POCKET
You will get a $5 gift card automatically at the register (the register prompts the cashier, you don’t even have to ask), which results in a total of $1.50 for five Glade items!!

There are other coupons available to print too, like $1.50 off two jar candles…
Buy 5 Jar candles, use 2 of the $1.50 off coupons = $9.50, out of pocket
Get $5 gift card
Total = $4.50 for 5 candles - Great deal!

There is one other scenario to try out too…

Buy 1 Glade Sce-ted Oil Warmer Get 1 Free = $3.99
Buy 2 Glade candles get $1.50 off = $3.50
Buy 1 Scented Oil Refill = $2.50
Total = $4.99 after gift card.

And another tip…. these items often have coupons in the products. I did this deal last week before these coupons were released and there was a coupon in the scented oil candle tin, for $2.00 off any purchase of 2 Glade items, so I will be using this coupon in conjunction with this sale to get an even better deal.

SC Johnson Rebate

If you are interested in doing mail in rebates, SC Johnson has one out right now that you can send in for THREE times, normally these are restricted to one per household!! It’s a $5 rebate when you purchase 3 SC Johnson (Glade) products, so you could get up to $15 back!

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE REBATE DETAILS

That would make all 3 of the above scenarios free, and even paying you to purchase these products…

I love deals like this ;)

Schwan’s Delivery Rewards Program

Nov-7-2009 By Jessica

We have been a Schwan’s customer for a little over 2 years now. Schwan’s isn’t the cheapest way to shop, I won’t deny that, but it’s definitely the easiest! There are delivery dates that we don’t order anything because we can’t afford it at the time. Our delivery driver is completely understanding and completely pressure free. He’s an awesome guy, the kids love him… and yell “Mom! Schwan’s man is here!” when the big yellow truck pulls up, just like I used to when I was little and my parents took deliveries from them! My favorites were the push up pops, which we have actually never ordered for our own kids before. Probably because things don’t last nearly as long with as many kids as we have as it did when it was just me and my sister fighting for them :)

We order alot of the same things each time. Our favorites are the breaded pork patties (these are expensive but superbly delicious and worth it!), turkey tenderloin, stuffed chicken breasts, frozen broccoli, pierogies, alfredo sauce chips, cheese filled breadsticks, mini corn dogs, ice cream (David loves the toffee), chicken nuggets, etc. These things are a nice supplement to our regular grocery shopping, which we are actually pretty frugal with. Schwan’s isn’t the picture of frugality, but they are HIGH quality and convenient. Our deliveries are set up for Fridays. It’s kind of nice when we are sitting around trying to figure out what to make for dinner on a Friday night, when nobody wants to cook. We know we can always find something quick, easy, and good from the catalog. And, we’ll still spend way less than going out to dinner.

Schwan's 2

The Rewards program is not really that new. It’s been out a little while, and I’m not sure why I haven’t signed up yet. For a little while we weren’t doing very big orders, just a couple of things here and there. Maybe that’s why. But at any rate, I just signed up tonight and want to share it with ya!

It’s a referral program, but doesn’t require you to refer anyone to use it. You earn rewards on your OWN purchases, as well as your referrals. You will earn 2.5 points per $50 order YOU place online. 5 points for $75 purchase, 10 points for $100 purchase, 15 points for $125 purchase and so on… (Note: Your Schwan’s delivery driver will still get full credit for the sale, since they run on commission based salaries… this is a good thing and something that would have kept me from signing up!). You will also earn 5 points for every referral, inititally, plus 5 points for every order THEY place online that is above $50. You will earn referral rewards in addition to your own personal rewards. Each point is worth $1 in Schwan’s product! It’s just that easy!

They also have a special offer right now for a 2010 calendar that includes $150 in coupons, 2 per month for the year. The cost is $7.99. It might be a worthwhile investment!

$10 off $30 at Bath & Bodyworks

Nov-5-2009 By Jessica

null

I have two hopeless addictions: CANDLES and BATH PRODUCTS. I am a loyal Yankee candle and Bath & Bodyworks shopper. There are others out there that I will settle for on occassion (because that’s really how much of an addict I am). I have tried them and I always come back to my fabulous favorites. So…. of course I took advantage of this sale. I really am not a mall person. Some people may disagree with that. But it’s honestly true. I went to the mall once in August for school clothes and I about lost my mind. Prior to that, I can’t even tell you. Maybe, the previous year for school clothes shopping? I used to love the mall…. heck, I used to WORK at the mall (many times!), I am not sure what has happened to me, but I honestly would pick anywhere to shop other than the mall! It’s not close to my house, it’s a bit of a drive, and when I go there I tend to spend more than I should because I don’t go there often enough to see and pass up all the things I would not normally see by shopping elsewhere. There is probably some deep rooted issue I have that I could potentially need therapy in uncovering, but….. Oh, nevermind :) This post isn’t about my beef with the darn shopping mall… LOL…

Onto the deal…

You can use this coupon in the store or online. I ordered 14 items for $26.93 shipped! The coupon code for online ordering is TENTHIRTY. The printable in store coupon can be found HERE.

If you shop online, be sure to go through EBATES for 6% back! Every little bit helps!

This deal is good through 11/22/09.

Free $40 To Spend At 1800Flowers.com

Nov-5-2009 By Jessica

1800Flowers.com Image

Now through November 30th, if you sign up for 1800flowers.com Fresh Rewards program, AND add 10 event reminders to your account (anniversaries, birthdays, etc.), you will get 400 points credited to your Fresh Rewards account within 48 hours. 400 points is equal to $40 on their website!

I just signed up today, so we’ll see how long it takes to get this reward. I noticed on their site that they have Popcorn Factory tins for under $40, so I think that’s what I’ll go for when it does come if it works on food items - YUM! :) If not, there are plenty of pretty flower arrangements that I would order for Thanksgiving or even Christmas table decorations (since we are done with birthdays this year and I’m sure there is time limit you have to redeem the rewards). A freebie I will take advantage of for myself, nice!
