Getting Ready for Disneyland…

Feb-16-2010 By Jessica

We are 38 days away from our Southern California trip - YAHOO! Very exciting! There is still so much to do to prepare for this trip, I am in NO rush. We are hitting Disneyland/California Adventures for 3 days, Sea World for 1 day and Universal Studios for 1 day. We will have 1 day with nothing planned just to enjoy the California sunshine (praying for that anyway!)

The kids got a special treat in the mail today. Several Disney characters were kind enough to send us postcards. VERY special. It made the girls smile ear to ear. Tanner even got one from Eeyore, and though he wasn’t as excited as the girls, it was nice for him to be remembered :) *I* even got one addressed to “Princess Jessica”. SWEET! Loved it… and just adds to the anticipation of our trip. :) :)

If you are considering a trip to any of the Disney parks, I highly recommend looking into a “Fairy Godmother” for your family. I found mine at www.mouseplanet.com, more specifically this forum thread.

The Great Wolf Lodge

Jan-31-2010 By Jessica

Our Great Wolf Lodge opened a couple of years ago. Nice to see the Northwest getting some of the cool things we usually only hear about/read about in other parts of the US :) We had been planning to go for awhile. We were going to take the kids for our anniversary but that never came to pass. David made reservations a couple of weeks ago and we surprised the kids with a trip up there on Thursday (we had no school on Friday!). The kids didn’t know where we were going until we pulled into the parking lot. The waterpark is very visible from I-5, but they were so oblivious to the outside world, all “plugged in” to their DSI’s and such. They had been begging us to tell them the first 30 minutes of the drive, but they eventually gave up! I have learned a lesson in this…. I will not tell the kids about a surprise until we are arriving at our destination. We had told the kids a week or so prior to going up there and I swear I never heard the end of it… “please just one hint, Mommy”. No! LOL.

The kids all screamed and were super excited as we pulled into the parking lot and they saw the giant sign that said Great Wolf Lodge all sparkly and pretty. They had seen commercials for this place. We’d driven by it many times. So, they were well aware of this place!

If you are planning a trip here and want to be as thrifty as possible, I suggest the following things:

  • Bring your own food, water, snacks, etc. It isn’t cheap to eat at this place. They have an expensive Dinner/Lunch/Breakfast buffet. Breakfast was $13.95 for adults (10 and up) and $8.95 for kids (9 and under). Dinner was something like $17.95 for adults and $13.95 for kids. not cheap They have a Pizza Hut Express, where can get a medium, 8 slice, pizza for $11.95. 3 Breadsticks for $3.95. This seemed to be a popular option for alot of people. This is what we chose for our lunch on Friday. Individual sodas are $2.95, so we opted for a 2 liter from PH that was $3.95 and we got 6 cups. That worked perfectly and we saved $15! You can’t take your own food into the waterpark area, but you can eat in the lodge, or right outside the door at tables with your own snacks. That is what we did. We also had a microwave and fridge in our room, so we had snacks, microwave popcorn, etc. for when we were done swimming on Thursday night.
  • Go during the week if you can, it’s cheaper! Look for discount codes before making reservations. We used a 20% off code we found. Sign up for their newsletter and get email specials! This is for the Grand Mound location. If you are elsewhere, change your location.
  • If you do Magiquest, it will add to your bill. One idea we had was to purchase the game for our whole family. It is $25 per game ($14.99 for the wand and $9.99 for the game), we could have shared the experience and saved ourselves $75. We didn’t do the Magiquest, but we watched others do it. It looked like fun. It was just not in the budget this time around.
  • Splurge and book the Kids Cabin or even bigger! The girls each had their own bed and it was separate from the main part of the room… they had their own TV and everything. It was very cool!
  • And… pictures!

Here’s a short video tour from youtube. This isn’t our video (because we are lame and forgot ours!), but you can see the inside of the park :)

    Vacation Planning - Road Trip

    Jan-24-2010 By Jessica

We leave for Southern California in 61 days! But, who’s counting? ;) We are all getting really excited. We will be leaving the evening of Friday, 3/26/10 and plan to drive all night, arriving in LA Saturday evening sometime. Ashlyn’s dad is getting married that Friday, so we won’t be leaving until that is over. She is going to be a bundle of excitement that week before with all of this going on. Yikes!!

I am sure that night will go smoothly, the kids will “plug themselves in”, as we call it. iPods, DSI’s, DVD players, etc., and entertain themselves to sleep! But, I am looking for ideas for my two youngest girls (ages 9 and 6) for the waking hours. There is only so much DSI and movie playing that can keep them from squirming. I want to make them little bags or baskets that they won’t be given until we leave with activities. I won’t post what I’ve gotten already, because they are surprises. I don’t have much yet though… any ideas? Post them in a comment if you do :)

The drive home will be much of the same, leaving a little earlier the following Saturday and getting home Sunday afternoon. I know it will be easier doing this trip with older kids than it was when they were babies, but I want to be as prepared as possible. They probably argue in confined spaces more now th It’s a LONG time to be “stuck” in a minivan together! LOL!

I’ll update as I get some more ideas :)

    Here We Go Again…

    Jan-14-2010 By Jessica

    No Apologies.

It is what it is. Things have been busy. I feel bad, because this blog is supposed to be a record of sorts for the kids and these blips that I go without blogging… is a blip in the timeline of events in their childhood. BAD! But…. we do what we can, don’t we? :)

A quick look back at the last few months, which have pretty much been a blur. Life is going too quickly!

Just about the time I took a break from blogging, on 11/20/2009, NEW MOON came out! My friend Crystal and I took our girls (her daughter Brittney, and two of mine… McKenzie and Ashlyn) to the midnight showing. Brave, we were! We bought tickets to the 9pm showing of Twilight… and I’m so glad we did. The lines were Disneyland’s nightmare…. wrapped around buildings… and such… we were sitting in a nice warm theater… watching Twilight and got first pick of seats for New Moon. PERFECT. We had a great time…. and have already made plans for Eclipse. My girls are racing to finish the book New Moon, hoping to start and finish Eclipse before the movie. It’s nice to share the love of this series with them. We are all pretty much obsessed. :) Anyway. PICTURES.

And, some pics of some of the holiday festivities. Woohoo!

    CHRISTMAS EVE JAMMIES!

It snowed very briefly for just one day - just Ashlyn was here to play out in it…. it was so pretty! Wish it lasted longer.

    Science Olympiad and Boppin Bo’s

    Nov-14-2009 By Jessica

McKenzie had her first Science Olympiad competition today. Wow, there were ALOT of schools and students from all over the county particiapting! She didn’t win, but she had a great time with all of the competitions from building bridges with marshmallows to launching gummy bears (um, that would have been my favorite LOL). She had fun walking around the Clark College campus and now has dreams of going there when she’s older. Hopefully, as she gets older, her expectations will be higher. Not that there is anything bad about Clark College… I went there and liked it, but doesn’t every parent dream of their child getting a Harvard scholarship? LOL.

Anyway, I took lots of pictures… but with my cell phone (so the pics aren’t great :( ), some are from Grandma Lisa’s cell phone also. I really think I need a good pocket camera. I love my Canon Rebel… but sometimes it’s not always convenient to take every place I go.

    Anyhow… onto the pics…

    Science Olympiad

Isn’t this shirt cool? I thought so, would be a neat shirt for Tanner to wear (though I’m sure he doesn’t feel that way) LOL (that is my maiden name and my 3 older kids’ last names). I was pretty proud that I was the only one at our table that knew what element K stood for. I rarely can say I know something that my husband doesn’t (when applied to this type of information LOL!).

    Science Olympiad

We then headed to Boppin Bo’s for lunch. We’d never been in there before… but happened to be a few doors down at the Verizon store and it looked like a fun place to have lunch. This place is very cool. The staff is all dressed in 50’s diner attire. There are nostalgic toys, signs, etc. all over the walls. The menus have the family story typed up on the back, a tell tale sign that you are in a nice family owned/ran restaurant. They had funny names for their burgers and sides. Each table had a little tub of Trivia Pursuit cards on them, which were fun to play with… McKenzie and Bailey both had fun taking turns reading the questions for the older people at the table to try to answer. One of Bailey’s questions was “What Roman Emperor was at the first Olympics?”. We heard it as “woman”, because she still says her R’s like she was born in Brooklyn LOL. It was funny because it stumped Grandma and Daddy both with the answer, as it was obviously a man and not a woman!

Bailey’s food was served in a car!

They have daily specials and Saturday’s was 1/2 price ice cream sundaes. They have a whole page of different ones to pick from and they all sounded so goood! It was hard to pick one, but we all made sure to save room to share one. David, McKenzie and I shared a vanilla ice cream with hot fudge syrup, peanut butter syrup and peanuts. It was SO good. The other side of the table (Grandma Lisa, Tanner, and Bailey) shared something that had chocolate and vanilla and whip cream LOL. I can’t remember what it was exactly. They had a sundae that is big enough to feed a whole table, 12 scoops of ice cream and tons of toppings for $19.95 and on half price day it would be $10…. would bes a great idea for a birthday treat! :)

And what’s a sundae without smearing a bit on your daughter’s nose? :)

    Halloween Candy Project

    Oct-18-2009 By Jessica

Man… Monday comes way too quickly these days. Arg!

The girls had fun making some cute Halloween candies this afternoon… it was just a little kit I picked up at Michael’s, but we’ll save the molds to make them again. They couldn’t see the front as they were filling the molds, so when we popped them out later after they were set, we had forgotten who had done which ones LOL.. they are kind of goofy looking - but for something that is gone in two bites, they are pretty cute in my book!

We Will Miss You Lexi <3

    Oct-15-2009 By Jessica

My dad’s girlfriend, Elaine, lost her dog Lexi last week. She died pretty suddenly and definitely unexpectedly, she will be greatly missed by everyone! Lexi was a mini Dachshund. I had never even seen one of these dogs before we met Lexi. Funniest thing about Lexi….she used to come over and visit and she’d go hunting around the house for Libby’s toys and once all those were found (not many since Libby isn’t a huge fan of dog toys), she’d move onto the kids’ little stuffed animals and toys. Cracked me up watching her carry things from room to room, piling them up under my kitchen table. She was a sweetie and while no dog could ever replace her, my dad and Elaine got a new puppy last weekend and my Dad brought her over today to introduce her to us. She is absolutely adorable. I’ve never seen a Dachshund puppy before, and me-oh-my, I fell in love with this little thing! My guinea pigs were bigger than she is. :)

Here are a few pics of my animal freaky girls enjoying her. I seriously might have to dognap this little thing…. simply adorable.

    Nice Day For A Walk

    Nov-16-2008 By Jessica

It was a nice day for a walk, so I went on a walk with McKenzie and Bailey around our neighborhood looking for leaves to “crunch”. McKenzie and Bailey love the crunching leaves sound. We don’t have any big trees on our street or in our yard, so we don’t really have many leaves, but we knew the nature trail would probably have some. And they did. GINORMOUS leaves! I wish we’d taken a walk sooner, because most of the leaves had fallen and were mushy from previous rainfall. It was still a nice walk though.

The girls were mostly just being silly in the pics I took, which was fine with me. If I try to tell them how to stand, smile, pose, they will usually get frustrated and avoid the camera at all costs. They do better when they get to just be silly. So here they are in all their silly-ness. The Mr and Mrs Smith one was McKenzie’s idea. The very bottom one with the huge leaf was me tickling McKenzie’s face with it LOL.

OH! OH! OH! One more thing…. McKenzie is super stubborn about her hair. I mean SUPER stubborn. She has worn big heavy bangs on her forehead since she was itty bitty. I have tried for years to get her to grow her bangs out, but when they get to the point that they are hanging way down in her eyes, I can’t stand it anymore and have to cut them. She has always refused to wear her bangs back. She doesn’t like her forehead or her eyebrows. I have tried SO many times to get her to give it a try. This morning I was brushing her hair after her shower and I put this headband on her. I told her that she is GORGEOUS any way she wears her hair… but that her hair back gave her a totally different look and I just kept telling her how beautiful her face is and how I like to see it once in awhile. The nice thing about her head of bangs, she could wear them straight and down like normal or go for something different like this. I was so happy that she finally agreed to try this out today… and she wore her hair back ALL day. She really does have a beautiful face… and I feel like her bangs are always covering so much of it up. I want her to be confident any way she looks… and am so glad she isn’t feeling self conscious about her forehead for the time being.

    Happy Birthday Libby

    Nov-16-2008 By Jessica

Belated Birthday I should say… Libby turned 4 on 11/2. McKenzie planned this big party for her pups last weekend but it rained all day. So we pushed it to this weekend.

She had plans, lots of plans. I really think my little girl has a future in party planning. She made invitations. And lists. And Signs. And goody bags. So, I pretty much let her loose to plan what she wanted. She invited all the dogs on our street (and their humans got to attend also). She invited Plain Grandma and her pups Shelby. Games ranged from musical chairs (but on the street and with music from a tiny alarm clock with horrible sound), to a dance off, to dog races, and more. This party was to start at 2pm, but the girls and their friends were outside making a sign before most people are even done with breakfast. All the kids in the neighborhood helped with the sign. SO cute. You know my stinky dog is LOVED. The kids had to wait for Shelby to arrive, which was fashionably late about 4:30pm LOL. They had fun and the girls were very proud of their work so it was a success! Libby is probably traumatized for life, but how often does a dog get a birthday party, right? LOL

    Happy 90th Birthday Grandma

    Nov-5-2008 By Jessica

Last week, my grandma turned 90! I haven’t met a whole lot of 90 year olds in my life, but from what I see, she is amazingly healthy! She still lives on her own, in the same house my dad was born and raised in. It has a basement with rickety old wood stairs. She still keeps her canned foods down there and her washer and dryer. Amazing!

My grandma loves all of us so much, though she’s not always the easiest person to get along with. When I was little, I had a hard time staying there for visits, because I was an only child and stayed there alone. She was very prim and proper. Sit up straight, elbows off the table, brush your teeth with baking soda, etc. Not that I didn’t enjoy visiting with her, but it was a completely different environment from my own home! A little dose of that never hurt me, now that I look back on it. My grandma loves her great grandkids… she is much easier with them than she ever was with me. My oldest has Grandma eating out of the palm of her hand! :) My dad still checks in with my Grandma every day and visits her every weekend, sometimes more often. I hope that my kids take care me as well as he does for her, and I suppose a lesson to me on how I need to take care of my parents as they get older! Great Grandma still sends jars of pennies home with the kids, still pays the kids $5 per A on their report card. You would never see Grandma in anything but a dress, complete with “stockings” as she calls them. I think she even wears those to bed ;) She has her hair done every Saturday at the same salon that I remember when I was little, same style too. Once in awhile she may change the style (and when I say once in a blue moon, that would be an understatement!), and we would be in shock. She prays before every meal, and that includes us all holding hands, even if we are dining in a nice restaurant. What other people think isn’t important to her, when it comes to praying before a meal. I admire that in her, because you certainly don’t see that very often. She is very honest, brutally so sometimes. I don’t think she intends to hurt people’s feelings but it happens, pretty often. Most of us are used to that. She has taught me alot about life in general. I wish she lived closer, so I could have learned more from her. I have a feeling she’ll be with us for years to come still. Happy Birthday Grandma!

Dad rented the Portland Sternwheeler Rose for her birthday gathering. We had a great 2 hour boat ride up the Willamette River. The rain stopped just for 2 hours that day. It literally started to rain as I was carrying the leftover food back up to my van. We were blessed!

Here are some pictures. I didn’t get any of me on my camera with Grandma, I hope that someone else did. I was busy taking tons of pictures of my own. Each picture can be clicked to enlarge.

    Happy Halloween

    Nov-3-2008 By Jessica

Hope you all had a great Halloween! We had fun! We expected (and were prepared) for rain. We were blessed with a dry evening and enjoyed trick or treating for 3 hours with not a single raindrop! My mother in law drove down to join us. My dad and his girlfriend and my nephew came along, and even my mom stopped in. The girls were thrilled because their good friends were able to go with us for a little while too. It was so warm, we didn’t even need jackets! The kids got so much candy! Tanner stayed home this year and ate passed out all of our candy to trick or treaters. When we got home the other 3 donated enough to fill a half of a freezer ziploc bag! Then they had fun trading what was left over. I discovered Bailey is candy CRAZY. McKenzie is very picky and only likes certain things. Tanner and Ashlyn like pretty much anything.

Today at lunch, I told Bailey she could pick out 3 pieces of candy from her bag. She took the bag to the table and when I walked over she had covered her whole lunch plate with candy. She had 14 pieces of candy on and around her plate, she thought she was going to eat. I don’t think so baby! She cracked me up Halloween morning by telling me (FIRST THING AFTER SHE WOKE UP) “Mommy it’s Halloween. I’m so excited, I can already taste it!”. She remembers it all too well! Such a goof ball!

    End of The Year Shindigs

    Jun-19-2008 By Jessica

    Pictures below include:

Bailey’s Last Day of Preschool - she’s had a great year and is so excited to start Kindergarten. I, on the other hand, am not so excited! My baby is growing up!

Ashlyn’s Team Party - Pictures of Ashlyn’s party, her trophy, and some with her friends. The parents played the girls in a game of softball… it was alot of fun. I was surprised how many parents were actually very good players in our old haggard states. LOL.

Jon’s Surprise Grad Party - I’m not sure how long Jon has been taking classes, but he’s been working full time and taking classes when he can… and they have a baby! That’s commitment. I know his wife, Tiffany, has worked just as hard. I give them total props! We had a date night that day… we went to a wedding first, which was really nice. Then, we picked up some dinner at Sonic (the famous Sonic, we’ve been watching commercials for this place for YEARS but not having anywhere nearby, it’s been worth the wait - fabulous food!). Then, we went to Big Al’s for bowling, pizza and Jon’s party. I had my first ever Cosmo - by Jon’s recommendation. I don’t really remember how it tasted now.. but it was okay. I drank it fast and I’m such a lightweight and cheap… $6.75 a drink is outrageous! Needless to say, that was all I had LOL.

Good times… bring on Summer Vacation!!

Sorry… the captions don’t all lign up right for some reason, even though they look right on my slide page. GRR!
